What it is

A one-page model you can argue with.

One page, eight cells. A strong headline at the top, problem and solution beneath it, customer and timing details, then traction, business model, and the team and ask. Closer to a marketing artefact than a memo — designed to be skimmed top-to-bottom in under a minute and still leave the reader with the right impression.

Where it came from.

The one-pager is the demoscene of founder documents — a constraint format where every word competes for space. It evolved as VCs and BD partners started asking for "something I can read between meetings"; founders responded with a denser version of the executive summary built for screens rather than print.

When to reach for it

How to use it

A four-step playbook.

Write the headline last. The other seven blocks tell you what claim it has to support.

Cap each block at 40 words. If you need more, cut.

Numbers with units beat adjectives. "12k WAU, +18% MoM since Jan" beats "growing fast."

Read it on a phone screen. If it doesn't hold up there, the layout is wrong.

Common mistakes

Avoid the canvas-killers.

Writing a mission-statement headline instead of a customer-facing one.

Citing growth percentages with no base. "300% growth" from $1k to $4k is technically true and meaningless.

Letting the team section read like a LinkedIn dump. Earned credibility beats job titles.
